iPhone 14 probably won’t be the first Apple Pencil iPhone, despite the Galaxy S22 Ultra

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra brought a stylus to flagship phones, for the first time since the Galaxy Note series sailed into the sunset. But could Apple pick up the slack and bring a stylus to the iPhone 14?

Well, we could write an article about how that would make it the best iPhone ever, or compile a balanced debate on whether or not that could happen, but we don’t want to waste your mind. weather.

It’s not going to happen.

A long history of iPhone stylus rumors

It’s like we’ve heard about iPhones getting the Apple Pencil since recorded history began. We heard rumors in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 – we’ll probably hear them in 2022 too.

It also wasn’t vague “iPhones might have a stylus” rumors, and they named the devices – we’ve heard it about the iPhone 11 in particular, and we’ve heard it a few times about from the iPhone Flip now too.

And do you know how many iPhones we’ve seen in those days that actually worked with the Apple Pencil? A grand total of zero. So there is no reason to think that the iPhone 14, unlike its predecessors, will receive a stylus.

Taking the rumors with a big pinch of salt

We often hear crazy rumors about iPhones, but they rarely come true.

Indeed, Apple tends to only offer features that appeal to mainstream consumers – MagSafe is useful for everyone, as are 5G and 120Hz displays, three improvements we’ve seen in recent iPhones. The leakers don’t seem to have seen that memo, though.

Of course, for a select group of users, styluses are also useful, but not enough to introduce them to the iPhone range.

That’s because there are only four members of the annual iPhone family, so if one or two use a stylus, that’s a quarter or half of the range, all touting a feature few will use. .

For comparison, Samsung offers many different phones in different ranges – it has the Galaxy S, A, J, Z and M lines, each of which has countless devices. So if you don’t want a stylus in a Samsung phone, you have plenty of alternatives.

Will we ever see an iPhone with a stylus?

Never say never – it’s possible that user habits will change to make styluses more popular, or maybe more apps will be built to use them.

But that will take time – Apple isn’t reinventing its devices, just refining them, and it will take a few years to transition from the current blocky design to one with room for a stylus.

It’s also worth pointing out that Apple will actually have to design a stylus small enough to fit inside an iPhone – unless another storage solution is planned.

Perhaps before that, we could see the Apple Pencil tablet become compatible with the phone, to bring cross-device functionality that could help certain types of creatives and artists. But again, it’s not something we expect anytime soon.

iPhone 14 rumors have already hinted at enough upgrades that we no longer expect: the lack of a notch, an increase in camera resolution, and the replacement of the mini with an iPhone 14 Max are all we really expect for now.

So despite the fact that the Galaxy S22 Ultra is a popular stylus phone and Motorola is making an increasingly big inroad in this market niche, we don’t see this feature taking hold enough for Apple to follow suit. .
