Below, we dive into some blinking footage snippets. and you’ll miss the long teaser, and we’re speculating what those specific moments could mean before the hit Netflix show returns.

Potential spoilers for Stranger Things 4 follow. Oh, and if you haven’t seen the trailer yet, you better watch it first (you can see it below) before heading to our breakdown of the trailer.

1. Meet Vecna, the main villain of Stranger Things 4

Let’s get rid of that nasty tease first. As the trailer reveals, there’s a new antagonist in town in Stranger Things 4 – and all signs point to it being the new (and potentially final) form of the Mind Flayer.

Fans won’t need reminding that the Mind Flayer was defeated by the Stranger Things gang at the end of Season 3. Now, though, it looks like he’s ready to stop messing around. Taking the form of a terrifying human-demogorgon hybrid, the Mind Flayer seems intent on destroying Eleven and company, once and for all.

And it looks like it will also have a new name, in Vecna. For the uninitiated, Vecna is one of the most famous villains in Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) history. And, given that the Stranger Things gang are big D&D fans, it wouldn’t be a major shock if they ended up giving the latest incarnation of the Mind Flayer that name. The second episode of Season 4 is titled “Vecna’s Curse”, after all, so we can find out more about the Mind Flayer’s backstory here.

Interestingly, the trailer apparently teases how the Mind Flayer acquired a human host body. As a few brief moments in the trailer suggest, the Mind Flayer’s headquarters appears to be none other than Creel House, one of the new locations we’ll see in Season 4.

Given that some members of the Stranger Things gang will be investigating the mystery behind Creel House, we wouldn’t be surprised if they learned that this place is the birthplace of the Upside Down. Not only that, but one of the former inhabitants of Creel House – Victor Creel, who will be played by Robert Englund (Freedy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise) – murdered his own children shortly after he and his family moved into their new home.

It’s possible that the Mind Flayer’s evil influence over Creel compelled him to kill his own children. And, even if Creel is imprisoned in a psychiatric unit by the time Stranger Things 4 films, it’s likely the Mind Flayer has modeled his new body on Creel. You know, with Creel potentially being a physical vessel for the Mind Flayer to commit atrocities.

Will Englund be double acting in Season 4 and play the roles of Vecna/Mind Flayer and Creel? Time will tell us. But, from the trailer, it looks like Eleven won’t be the only Stranger Things team member the Mind Flayer is looking for in Season 4…

2. Why is Max levitating? Does she have superpowers?

Wait, does Max have superpowers too?! (Image credit: Netflix)

One of the other big surprises in the Season 4 trailer is Sadie Sink’s Max. As seen in the image above, Max is seen floating above Dustin, Lucas and Steve at some point in Stranger Things 4 – so does this suggest that, like Eleven, she too has superpowers? ?

It’s possible, but we think there’s a simpler explanation for why Max can apparently levitate.

The gang may have defeated the Mind Flayer in Season 3, but their victory didn’t come without losses. Billy, Max’s half-brother, sacrificed himself to save Max, Eleven and Mike from the Mind Flayer in the Season 3 finale – a moment that broke our hearts despite Billy’s antagonistic ways.

Still, despite his death, it looks like Billy has a big role to play in Stranger Things 4. Episode 4 – Dear Billy – is likely to focus on Max and his grief surrounding Billy’s disappearance, and it looks like the images of his visit to his grave will take place during this episode. This means that the scene where Max is floating in the air is also likely to happen during Dear Billy.

Unlike Eleven, however, we don’t think Max has any superpowers. Instead, we think his ties to Billy – who, don’t forget, was a physical vessel (much like Creel, as we mentioned above) for the Mind Flayer in Season 3 – make it a prime target for the Mind Flayer in the series. next installment.

Given the Mind Flayer can levitate and her bond with Billy, we suspect he’ll be able to track down Max and try to use her as his next physical vessel, and that’s why we suspect she’s floating around in the tunes in this particular scene. . Oddly enough, it’s Max running away from Vecna/Mind Flayer towards the end of the trailer, so maybe Vecna has possessed her and is trying to take over her mind in a creepy place.

Sure, it would be awesome if Max somehow had superpowers, but we’re not convinced.

3. Is Stranger Things season 4 about to introduce alternate dimensions?

Alternatively, Max’s ability to levitate may be because Stranger Things 4 could introduce us to alternate universes.

Confused? Allow Twitter user Mia_inSlytherin to explain. As Mia explains, we see of them different versions of Billy’s tombstone in the trailer – one reading ‘Billy’ and the other reading ‘William’.

It would be a major oversight on the part of Netflix and the Duffer Brothers if they mistakenly spoiled Billy’s tombstone inscription in two scenes.

Sure, it’s possible – just look at some glaring mistakes made in Game of Thrones (remember the coffee cup incident?) and the Mandalorian “crew member in jeans” moment to see that mistakes can be made.

Is it possible, however, that Stranger Things 4 shows us an alternate reality where Max, not Eleven, has superpowers? If this scene isn’t a dream sequence, or based on our “Mind Flayer taking control of Max” theory, it certainly is plausible. And there’s another very brief scene in the trailer that alludes to it…

4. The gateways are open

Are we going to get a major Stranger Things lore reveal regarding the portals to the Upside Down? (Image credit: Netflix)

At 1:59 into the trailer, we get a very, very brief glimpse of what appear to be portals to other dimensions.

Does this confirm that we’ll see alternate universes in Stranger Things 4? Perhaps. It would make sense that Upside Down/Mind Flayer/Vecna had access to other worlds and potentially destroyed them in their quest to rule the multiverse. That is, until Eleven and the company intervened.

Regardless of what this particular snippet of footage alludes to, it’s certainly a hot topic of discussion following the release of the trailer. Several fans have retrieved the timestamps visible around each portal, with some trying to tie them to specific moments in the trailer. At the time of writing, however, no major correlation has been established between them.

5. Who rips the guitar in Upside Down?

Amid the quick edits of the last 30 seconds of the trailer, you may have noticed an unknown individual shredding a guitar on an upside-down building.

So who is this character? This is Eddie Munson, a new individual who will be played by Joseph Quinn in Season 4.

For those who don’t know, Eddie is the leader of the Hellfire Club, the D&D club that Mike and Dustin join at Hawkins High School. Netflix previously described Eddie as an “80s metalhead” (hence the guitar) who will find himself “at the terrifying epicenter of this season’s mystery”. Considering he’ll be heading to the Upside Down with some of the main cast, this character synopsis makes a lot more sense now.

6. Is it a blind Doctor Brenner?

A screenshot of a blind man in the Stranger Things season 4 trailer

Was Doctor Brenner permanently marked by the demogorgon in season 1? (Image credit: Netflix)

We already knew that Matthew Modine would be reprising his role as Doctor Martin Brenner in Season 4, but it looks like the sinister scientist isn’t just back in a flashback.

Near the end of the trailer, we see an old, blind man who appears to be looking in the direction of an offscreen character. It’s hard to pinpoint who exactly it is, but we suspect it’s none other than Brenner.

It might seem strange to say – after all, wasn’t Brenner killed by the demogorgon in Season 1? Everyone thought so but, seeing as we didn’t actually see him die during this scene, there was no guarantee he met his death at the hands of this monstrosity.

It is therefore possible that he survived this encounter but paid the price of losing his sight. If he did, it’s also plausible that he went into hiding so Eleven couldn’t find him. Given the brief scene in the trailer in question, however, it looks like he didn’t do a very good job. Provided it’s Doctor Brenner, expect answers – such as how he’s still alive, as well as the secrets hidden inside the walls of Hawkins National Laboratory – to be revealed. in season 4.

Stranger Things Season 4 Part 1 will launch exclusively on Friday, May 27. Part 2 will arrive a month later on Friday, July 1.
