A 64-year-old Tampa man said he was in an “impossible situation with no way out” before he killed his terminally ill wife and daughter-in-law and then himself on Wednesday, police say.
Thomas Schultz called 911 early Wednesday morning and told the operator he planned to kill himself, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
When deputies arrived at his Riverview home, they found Schultz dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound on the back porch, with a revolver beside him.
Inside, Schultz’s wife, who was 80, and his stepdaughter, who was 50, had both died of gunshot wounds to the chest.
Relatives told police the two women were terminally ill, but gave no details. The daughter-in-law was hooked up to a feeding tube in a hospital-style bed.
“There is no ‘impossible situation’. There is always hope and there is always help,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement.
“This tragedy happened during the month of May, Mental Health Awareness Month. I urge anyone in crisis to seek help.
